Embracing the changing seasons is one of the best ways to feel connected with nature and, in turn, to centre into the present moment.
We’re not saying it’s easy though!
The years often feel like they’re whizzing past (wasn’t it 2020 just yesterday?!), so keeping in touch with seasonal changes may feel impossible. Taking time to enjoy the cosiness of winter, the reflection of autumn, the freedom of summer and the freshness of spring is probably not number 1 on your to-do list.
However, we really do encourage you to try to step back this spring and smell the roses or, erm, the tulips? One of the best ways to do just that is to update your living space in some simple ways, to reflect the start of spring in all of its glory.
Lighten and brighten
Whilst darker tones and rich furnishings are perfect in autumn and winter, adding opulence and cosiness, spring calls for something a little lighter. Inline with the increasing sunshine, bring pale colours, neutral tones and fresh touches into your space to make it feel like an ode to the current season.
Switch out faux fur for natural tartan (this one is made from recycled materials!). Swap warm white bulbs for those with a cooler tone. And perfect your “shelfie” with rustic, handmade ceramics like these bud vases, in white and nude colours.
Use the power of sound
According to researchers at BSMS, playing “natural sounds” to patients affected the bodily systems that control the rest-digest autonomic nervous system. That means that sound really does have a powerful effect on the body!
But you probably didn’t need to be told that – we’ve all felt the influence of music.
To welcome in spring, set an airy and happy mood with this playlist. Free on Spotify, it’s been created to evoke “the feeling of sun on your cheeks, blankets around your body and music in your ears”.
Set the mood with scent
If there’s one thing we favour slightly more than sound though, it’s scent! We understand just how impactful different smells can be, thanks to aromachology (the study of scent psychology).
So even if you change nothing else in your home this season, switch out your candles, diffusers and room sprays!
Light, floral and airy mixes should be your go-to choice, to bring alive the carefree and joyful essence of spring. Our Healing blend combines anxiety-relieving lavender with uplifting lemongrass. Next, peppermint invigorates the senses and brings a sense of clarity to your room and your mind.
Equally fresh, our Gemini candle is a great choice for the warmer seasons. Clarifying basil blends with soothing lavender and neroli, to bring you back to a halcyon state of mind.
Wreaths aren’t just for Christmas
You’re probably most familiar with the deep green wreaths that adorn doors at Christmas, likely with some dried oranges and added sparkle. But why not bring this fun seasonal decoration into spring with you?
Switch out dark, festive colours for whites and neutrals and embrace lighter foliage.
If you’re feeling up for it, try to make your own. Simply forage wildflowers and flora from your local area, then use this guide to turn it into something you’ll want to hang up with pride.
If you’re not in the creative spirit, don’t worry. This premade option is a great choice instead.
Bring the outdoor, in
It’s amazing what plants can do to your mood. As well as making us feel more connected to nature, they just make a room feel fresher.
Get your fingers green this spring and plant some fresh herbs in your kitchen. Not only are they more eco-conscious than shop bought alternatives, but you know they’re grown without pesticides and you’ll have a constant supply of fresh goodness to add to your meals.
All on top of a lovely dose of spring on your worktop.
As a side note, we’ve definitely got our eye on this beautiful planter!
