It’s no wonder we’re drawn to commemorate the women who shape our lives in such profound ways. From big festivals to small family traditions, each culture has its own unique way of doing just that.

Let’s take a tour around the globe and see how different societies celebrate the incredible role of Mothers.

Divine Inspiration in India

Every October, Hindus in India come together to celebrate Durga Puja, a 10-day festival dedicated to honouring Durga, the goddess of mothers. This tradition, believed to have originated in the sixteenth century, is more than just a religious event; it’s a time for family reunions and joyous festivities. In the weeks leading up to Durga Puja, families busy themselves with preparations, from cooking delicious meals to gathering thoughtful gifts and adorning their homes with festive decorations.

Sky-High Appreciation in Japan

Over in Japan, they have Kodomo no Hi, or Children’s Day, which is all about showing gratitude for both kids and Mums. Families hang colourful carp-shaped windsocks to represent the strength of Mothers guiding their little ones. It’s a sweet gesture that speaks volumes about the importance of maternal support in Japanese culture.

Giving Thanks to Mums and Nature in Ethiopia

The Antrosht festival, celebrated at the end of the rainy season in early Autumn, is a heartfelt tribute to Mothers. As soon as the skies clear, families gather from near and far to partake in a grand feast. Daughters take charge of bringing vegetables and cheese, while sons contribute meat, coming together to create a delicious meat hash. Amidst the feast, songs are sung and dances performed, weaving tales of family heroes and fostering a sense of unity and joy.

Musical Celebrations in Mexico

If you’ve ever been to Mexico during Dia de las Madres, you know it’s a party you don’t want to miss. From lively parades to cosy family gatherings, it’s a day dedicated to honouring the sacrifices and unconditional love of Mums and other relatives, whether they’re here with us or watching over us.

Flowers and Choccies in The United Kingdom

Of course, we can’t forget about Mothering Sunday in the UK. It’s a day to shower Mums with love and appreciation, whether it’s through flowers, cards, or simply spending quality time together. It’s a universal reminder of the incredible influence and love of Mothers.

And it’s just around the corner, falling on March 10th for 2024.
