The 2010s have been described as the decade that self-care went mainstream.
When you really think about it, did you hear that term prior to the explosion of Instagram or the popularity of Pinterest?
Whilst we all might have been practising it (bubble baths and meditation weren’t invented circa 2012!), the phrase itself and the awareness around it has certainly been a more recent phenomenon.
Personally, I’m all for it. However, as a business owner and someone who wants to maintain friendships, family life and my own hobbies, I know that we don’t all have full weekends to dedicate to yoga retreats.
You’re busy. So let’s just jump straight into some quick and easy self-care practices, perfect for Mental Health Awareness Month and beyond…
Add some fun to your ‘fit
Yep. Your clothes can truly change the way you feel. It’s science, baby!
In fact, Shakaila Forbes-Bell, Fashion Psychologist, says that “we get dressed to fulfil an emotional need.” Make the most of the power of what you wear by dedicating a few moments to picking an outfit that fulfils you.
Whether it’s adding a splash of colour (apparently orange is great for boosting happiness and energy!), some sequins or a bag that speaks to your soul, really consider how your look is making you feel.
Talking of psychology, Shakaila is also a big fan of using the power of scent to set a mood. And you know that’s what we’re all about!

Get your watering can
Time to add a wellness kick to a task that’s already on your to-do list: Watering your plants!
It’s been shown that being around plants helps us feel more calm and relaxed, thus decreasing levels of anxiety. As a simple act of self-care (that also benefits your greenery), take a few minutes to mindfully care for your plants. Water them, prune them, sing them a lullaby! Just be fully present in the moment: Turn off your radio, take some deep breaths and really pay attention to the sights and smells around you.
Banish your phone
86% of smartphone users are said to check their devices while in conversations with friends and family.
We believe that connection is one of the cornerstones of mental wellbeing. The simplest way to promote it? Stand up, walk into the next room and set your phone down. You might be surprised how many times you habitually reach to check your notifications or fill the smallest of silences. Keeping it out of sight means that you can focus on your loved ones. And that includes you.
Now that we’ve told you it’s time to get away from the devices for a while, we better wrap things up! Since it is Mental Health Awareness month, we want to send out some extra love to anybody struggling at the moment. You are truly not alone. Seeking help, whether big or small is a powerful and brave step towards a happier you.
The charity Mind has some brilliant resources to help you do just that.
